What is Hashishene?
Hashishene is a rare monoterpene unique to cured hashish. It was first discovered in 2014 by French researchers analysing traditional Moroccan Hash. Whilst conducting this research they discovered it was almost entirely absent in raw cannabis flower but accounted for up to 10–14% of the volatile compounds in aged hash resin.
How is Hashishene created ?
Research has found that no living hemp/cannabis plant contains Hashishene so how or where does it come from? Firstly let’s look at where it all begins. Myrcene a powerful terpene that provides a signature scent profile characterized by damp earth, cloves, herbal vegetation, and ripe tropical fruit (mango). Beyond cannabis, it is found in high concentrations in hops (giving beer its herbal bitterness), thyme, lemongrass, bay leaves, and mangoes. Now here’s the science, Myrcene over time degrades into Hashishene. Contrary to common belief, hashishene is not created by oxygen adding to myrcene (oxidation). It is a photochemical rearrangement where myrcene’s open carbon chain folds into a strained, double-ringed (bicyclic) hydrocarbon with the exact same molecular formula.
Effects on the Body & Mind
Due to hashishene being a relatively recent chemical discovery, direct clinical research strictly on isolated hashishene is limited. However, its behavior in hashish and its relation to myrcene give insight into its body effects:
• Deep Body Relaxation ("Couch-Lock"): Because it derives from myrcene—a terpene known for sedating properties—hashishene contributes heavily to the heavy, tranquilizing body high associated with traditional hashish.
• Entourage Effect Synergies: Hashishene interacts with cannabinoids like CBG and CBD, steering the experience toward grounding, sedative, and anti-anxiety physical states.
• Potential Therapeutic Indications: Like similar monoterpenes, it is believed to contribute to pain relief (analgesia), anti-inflammatory response, and stress reduction through synergistic interaction with the endocannabinoid system.
Ultimately, hashishene demonstrates how natural curing processes can transform simple plant molecules into unique therapeutic compounds. It offers a gentle, physically grounding profile well-suited for recovery, relaxation, and deep rest.
